Alerts and Current Awareness Services

Alerts are offered by journal publishers and other databases to help you keep up with recent publications related your research interests.

EBSCOhost Database Alerts

  1. Open an EBSCOhost database
  2. Sign In to "My EBSCOhost" and login or create an account
  3. Run the search that you want to have run as an alert
  4. Click on "Search History/Alerts"
  5. Mark the check box next to the search and click on the "Save Searches / Alerts" link
  6. Name the search and choose the radio button for "Alerts"
  7. On the web form, select how often you want the alert sent and provide your email address

Ovid Database Alerts

  1. Open an Ovid database
  2. Click on the "Personal Account" link (upper right) and login or "Create a Personal Account"
  3. Return to the "Main Search Page" and run the search that you want to have run as an alert
  4. Mark the check box next to the search and click on the "Save Selected" button
  5. Name the search and change the "Type" pull-down menu to "AutoAlert(SDI)"
  6. On the web form, select how often you want the alert sent

ProQuest Database Alerts

Create a Search Alert

Follow these steps to create a new search alert:

  1. Run the desired search from either the Basic or the Advanced page.
  2. On the Results page, click Set Up Alert.
    You will see the Set up Your Search Alert page.
  3. Complete the required information and click Save.
  4. You will see a confirmation page, summarizing your information. If the information is correct, click Done. Otherwise, you can click Delete this Alert to delete the alert.

Search Alerts on Recent Searches

Follow these steps to create an alert on a recent search:

  1. From the Basic or Advanced page, click the # Recent Searches link . Or, from the Results page, click the # Recent Searches link located near the bottom of the page in the grey Tools bar.
    You will see the Recent Searches page.
  2. Locate the desired search, and click the Set up Alert link next to the search.
    You will see the Set up Your Search Alert page.
  3. Complete the required information and click Save.
  4. You will see a confirmation page, summarizing your information. If the information is correct, click Done. Otherwise, you can click Delete this Alert to delete the alert.

Create a Publication Alert

Follow these steps to create a new publication alert:

  1. Locate the desired publication using Publication search.
  2. From the Publication page, click the Set up Alert link.
    You will see the Set up Your Publication Alert page.
  3. Complete the required information and click Save.
  4. You will see a confirmation page, summarizing your information. If the information is correct, click Done. Otherwise, you can click Delete this Alert to delete the alert.

PubMed Database Alerts

  1. Sign into My NCBI or create an account with My NCBI 
  2. Click on the PubMed link at the top of the page or simply go to PubMed 
  3. Run the search that you want to have run as an Alert
  4. Click on the link "Save search" at the top of the page and then the "Save" button 
  5. On the web form:
    • choose the radio button for "e-mail updates",
    • choose the update interval (daily, weekly, monthly), the format, the maximum number of references to be sent (select a large number to make sure you get everything that is new),
    • click on the "Save" button

Web of Science/ISI Database Alerts

Web of Science offers Search Alerts via "My Saved Searches" and Citation Alerts via "My Citation Alerts". Once per week or month the updated results of your search will be e-mailed to you. Web of Science is the key resource for Citation Alerts.

Search Alert

  1. Open Web of Science
  2. Click on "Sign in" and either login or create an account
  3. Run the search that you want to have run as an alert
  4. Click on "Advanced Search" and check the box next to the desired search
  5. Click on the button "Saved History / Create Alert"
  6. On the web form, name the search
  7. Put a check next to "Send Me E-mail Alerts" and chose weekly or monthly
  8. Click on "Save -- Save your history to the server"

Citation Alert

  1. Open Web of Science
  2. Click on "Sign in" and either login or create an account
  3. Locate the article whose citation record you want to follow
  4. Click on the title of the article
  5. Click on the button "Create Citation Alert" (right column) and then on "Done"
