Scholarly Profile: Curating Your Work & Your Reputation Online: Getting Started

Are you interested to discover and monitor the influence of your own work in your scholarly community, among other practitioners, or in the community at large? Would you like to know about tools and strategies that may help you to gather and curate indicators of that influence?

Library faculty Dana McFarland and Kathleen Reed offer consultations to assist faculty, graduate, and fourth year students to understand the evolving nature of scholarly presence online, to define objectives, and to assist scholars to develop an individual approach to critically managing that presence.

Background

Through a research collaboration with a colleague at Royal Roads University, Kathleen and Dana discovered a curiosity among scholar-practitioners in these emerging areas of scholarly communication, indicating that it may be useful to consult with a librarian about curation strategies and tools such as:

  • Non-citation indicators of influence, and how to discover or collect these;

  • Alternative sources of traditional citation data;

  • Critical evaluation of tools and metrics, including where to invest your effort;

  • Discipline-oriented tools and approaches;

  • Making yourself uniquely identifiable as a scholar/creator.

Details

Consultations vary depending on individual objectives and background.

Your participation will have these benefits:

  • You will gain real information about the reach of your existing scholarship.

  • You will be introduced to concrete strategies and tools for establishing your profile, and gathering and managing indicators related to the use of your work.
