Library Space for VIU Service Providers

A Learning Commons with a student and learning focused partnering ethic can foster strong ties among service providers who are otherwise housed across campus, each of whom provides expertise to different areas of student learning. Locating or hosting these experts in one centralized location can lead to improvements, both for service providers and for students. It provides convenience and seamless transitions or referrals for students while allowing service providers to model collaboration and be more visible.

VIU Service Providers are encouraged to contact our Learning Commons Librarian, Luke McLeod, if they are interested in participating. Current participants are:

  • Writing Centre
  • Student IT Support
  • International Academic Support
  • Peer Supported Learning
  • Wellness Peers
  • Career Studio

Displaying Art in the Library

VIU Library invites students to display artwork and exhibits on the 3rd and 5th floors. Past displays have included ARTS 484, Typography, and more. To arrange a display, please contact Luke McLeod

Promotional Materials & Outreach in the Library

Posters, signage, and tabling are not typically permitted in the library. In the past, we have made exceptions for initiatives that align with our Library Strategic Plan. If you believe that you qualify for an exception, please contact Luke McLeod.

One of the challenges that VIU Library frequently navigates is the success of library space and its popularity. Library space is a frequent target for those that wish to promote, table, host events, etc. However, this space is first and foremost a place for students to complete their assignments. Therefore, it is important to us to prevent the erosion of student space (even if temporary) and limit distractions. We believe the nearby cafeteria and quad serve this function.

Filming and Photography in the Library

Permission to film or photograph in library spaces must be requested and approved in advance. Please contact Luke McLeod, at least one week prior to the requested date.

Please include the following details:

  • Proposed time, date, and duration
  • Desired location of the library
  • A description of the project

Approved requests must follow the these conditions:

  • People in the video or photo must be recruited in advance. Please do not film, photograph, or interrupt students in the library.
  • Please avoid doing crowd shots (people in the library have a reasonable expectation of privacy).
  • Please try to minimize the disruption to students as much as possible.
